Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announces ₹153 crore to settle apple growers' liabilities

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced during his visit to Narkanda that the state government has released ₹153 crore to clear the liabilities of apple growers. This amount includes a hefty burden of ₹90 crore left by the previous government. For the first time, all liabilities under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) have been cleared.

Reinstating subsidies and increasing support prices

The CM mentioned that the previous government had stopped subsidies on apple pesticides, fertilizers, and other essential agricultural products. His government immediately reinstated these subsidies, ensuring that quality products are accessible to farmers. Additionally, the support price for culled apples has been increased by ₹1.5 per kg, raising it to ₹12 per kg. Last year, the government mandated the sale and purchase of apples by weight. This year, a universal carton system has been implemented to further support horticulturists.

Development plans for tourism and infrastructure

During his visit, CM Sukhu met with local residents, listened to their concerns, and assured them that their issues would be addressed promptly. He also revealed plans to explore the installation of a ropeway from Narkanda to Hatu Temple and the widening of the Hatu Mandir road. Recognizing the potential for tourism in the Upper Shimla region, the government has allocated ₹5 crore for an ice skating rink in Narkanda and plans to construct a multipurpose sports hall. Efforts are also being made to upgrade the Dhalli to Narkanda road to a four-lane highway, with tunnels to improve accessibility. The CM stated that discussions would soon be held with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, regarding the implementation of these projects.
